Garden moles have now joined the animal revolution. It is being reported that a 63-year-old man in Zingst, Germany was killed last Thursday after electrocuting himself on a high-voltage cable meant to rid his garden of moles. But I think that’s just the cover story.
I think the man, a retired construction foreman, was indeed trying to install the 380-volt cable and metal ground spikes in order to kill the moles, however, I think the moles got wind of his impending actions and made their move first.
And what a move it was. According to police spokesman Uwe Werner, there was enough voltage to run a heavy-duty power saw or a cement mixer. Wow, that man must have really hated those moles.
Fun facts about the mole:
Male moles are called boars; females are called sows.
Some species are aquatic or semi-aquatic.
Moles are considered to be an agricultural pest in some countries, while in others, such as Germany, they are a protected species but may be killed if a permit is received.
Contrary to popular belief, moles don’t eat plant roots.
Darwin cites moles as an example of mammals that have organs that have become vestigial and are being phased out by natural selection:…state of the eyes is probably due to gradual reduction from disuse, but aided perhaps by natural selection.
