On this day in 1984, the song on the top of the pop charts was “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins.
The song holds a special place in my heart. I have very cherished memories of my friend and I dancing around in her back room, kicking off our Sunday shoes. The movie is special to me too, but not as much as the song.
-“Footloose” was the biggest hit and only #1 song for Kenny Loggins. Two year later Loggins contributed to the song “Danger Zone” from the movie Top Gun.
-Kenny Loggins wrote the music for the song “Footloose” while in a hotel room in Lake Tahoe, Nevada where he was recovering after suffering broken ribs from falling during his performance in Provo, Utah.
-The lyrics to the song were written by Dean Pitchford, who also wrote the screenplay for the movie.
-“Footloose” was not the only #1 hit from the Footloose soundtrack – “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” by Deniece Williams was the other one.
-The Footloose soundtrack knocked Michael Jackson’s Thriller album out of the #1 spot on the U.S. charts.
-The song “I’m Free (Heaven Helps The Man),” also by Kenny Loggins and from the Footloose soundtrack, landed on the charts at #22.
This is the original music video for “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins. It’s one of the first music videos in which the singer never appears, by the by.
Footloose by Kenny Loggins
I been working so hard
Keep punching my card
Eight hours. For what?
Oh, tell me what I got
I get this feeling
That time’s just holding me down
I’ll hit the ceiling
Or else I’ll tear up this town
Tonight I gotta cut
(Chorus)
Loose, footloose
Kick off your Sunday shoes
Please, Louise
Pull me offa my knees
Jack, get back
C’mon before we crack
Lose your blues
Everybody cut footloose
You’re playing so cool
Obeying every rule
Dig way down in your heart
You’re yearning, burning for some
Somebody to tell you
That life ain’t passing your by
I’m trying to tell you
It will if you don’t even try
You can fly if you’d only cut
(Chorus)
Loose, footloose
Kick off your Sunday shoes
Please, Louise
Pull me offa my knees
Jack, get back
C’mon before we crack
Lose your blues
Everybody cut footloose
FIRST – We got to turn you around
SECOND – You put your feet on the ground
THIRD – Now take a hold of your soul
FOUR – Whooooooooa, I’m turning itLoose, FOOTLOOSE
(Chorus)
Loose, footloose
Kick off your Sunday shoes
Please, Louise
Pull me offa my knees
Jack, get back
C’mon before we crack
Lose your blues
Everybody cut footloose
