Tonight was the first elimination on Dancing with the Stars, and it was a double whammy – two couples got the boot.
The men were up first. In the bottom three were Michael Irvin and Anna Demidova, Ashley Hamilton and Edyta Sliwinska, and Tom DeLay and Cheryl Burke. After the obligatory forced tension, Ashley and Edyta were eliminated.
After the tribute to Patrick Swayze – which I’ll talk about in a second – it was the women’s turn on the gauntlet.
First Natalie Coughlin and Alec Mazo were marked safe, along with Mya and Dmitry Chaplin. Then Melissa Joan Hart and Mark Ballas, Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough, and Debi Mazar and Maksim Chmerkovshiy were told they were not being voted off.
Macy Gray and Jonathan Roberts were eventually announced as the second couple to be eliminated from the show.
The Patrick Swayze tribute started with Dmitry Chaplin and Chelsie Hightower dancing to “She’s Like the Wind” – a song originally sung by Patrick Swayze for the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. The DWTS band sang the song, which I understand is their job, but I wish they had played a recording of Patrick singing it.
Jonathan Roberts and Anna Demidova were next, dancing to “Unchained Melody” from Ghost. Then Tony Dovolani and Cheryl Burke took to the stage and danced to “(I’ve Had) The Time of my Life” – culminating in the reenactment of the closing scene of Dirty Dancing, complete with Tony lifting Cheryl high over his head as their final tribute to Patrick Swayze.
